Setting a different background for each monitor in multi-monitor setups should be built into the desktop but, well... Gnome lacks this feature.

If you use Gnome, one way of having a different wallpaper for each monitor is to use the HydraPaper application.

Gnome Global AppMenu is a Gnome Shell extension that's currently in beta, which implements Ubuntu Unity's global menu to Gnome Shell. The extension also provides support for HUD menus so you can search in an application's menus.

The extension developer announced it discontinued the project a while back, but he changed his mind back in January 2018, when he successfully added support for Wayland. I only tested the Gnome Global AppMenu extension on X.Org (which is default in Ubuntu 18.04) though. The instructions in this article won't work on Wayland.

Check out the complete article on LinuxUprising on how to add a global menu and searchable HUD menu to Gnome Shell. The instructions are Ubuntu-specific, but can easily be used to install the global menu in most Linux distributions (with Gnome Shell, obviously).

The official Atom page lets you download .deb and .rpm packages for Linux, but there's no mention of an official repository you could use so you get automatic updates with each Atom release.

LinuxUprising explains that there are, in fact, official Atom repositories for some Linux distributions, like Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, CentOS, and openSUSE. Despite most websites recommending third-party repositories, this is the official Atom repository!

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS does not include an option in the installer to encrypt the home directory. This option was removed from the Ubuntu installer because it uses eCryptfs, which is considered "buggy, under-maintained", and the recommended alternative is a full disk encryption using LUKS.

If despite this you still want to encrypt your home folder using eCryptfs, here are the how-to instructions.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS does not include an option in the installer to encrypt the home directory. This option was removed from the Ubuntu installer because it uses eCryptfs, which is considered "buggy, under-maintained", and the recommended alternative is a full disk encryption using LUKS.

For per-directory encryption, like the home folder, it's recommended to use fscrypt, which as far as I can tell doesn't support encrypting the home directory unless it's on a separate partition. I haven't used fscrypt, but if there are requests, I will try to post an article about how to use it to encrypt your (separate partition) home folder.

If despite this you still want to encrypt your home folder using eCryptfs, you'll find instructions here.

Oracle JDK10 was released quite recently and is considered stable. This is not a long term support release, but it's still required by some Java apps, and of course, some of you might need it for Java development under Ubuntu.
You can download Oracle JDK 10 from its website or use these instructions to install it in Ubuntu.

If you've just installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, you may be looking for a list of things to do after installing it. With Gnome Shell taking over the interface for this new Ubuntu LTS release, things are a bit different in the custiomization part, and with snap packages, there are many more applications available in Ubuntu Software, so the use of PPA repositories should drop to a minimum. Check out the article on LinuxUprising and tell us what you think. What do you do after installing a new Ubuntu versioon and in particular, what do you tweak to make Gnome Shell more personal?
